It has been said that the experiment that is Canada began millennia ago with our Indigenous peoples. It then commenced its inexorable evolution to present time with the arrival of the Europeans. These ‘stories written on the land’ are still evident today – though sometimes muted – and remind us of our diverse heritage. In the 150th year of the ‘Canadian’ experiment since Confederation, we reflect on how landscapes matter to us, and how they will shape our collective future.

This presentation will define Cultural Landscapes and how their tangible and intangible Heritage Values are expressed as Character Defining Elements through a selection of culturally significant ‘historic places’ across Canada (and beyond!). On reflection, the intent is to engender a feeling of pride as an active participant in this broader Canadian experiment.
