Activate YYC

ActivateYYC started as a tactical urbanism microgrant initiative by the Federation of Calgary Communities. The Federation of Calgary Communities (or ‘The Federation’ for short) aims to support volunteer-driven, tactical urbanism projects that engage the community and create meaningful changes to shared spaces. Communities and residents are invited to reimagine spaces across Calgary as places of greater activity and connectivity. Our passion to see this unfold in our City has quadrupled in the midst of the Pandemic.

Faces of community

Faces of Community is back! Launched in 2017 as a part of March Community Association Awareness month, Faces of Community aims to highlight the many different faces of community volunteers making a difference in our city’s communities.

Every day, our Faces of Community folks spend their time and passion making their communities better. They are volunteers who see the needs of their communities and proactively get involved. They are everyday people doing the extraordinary in their communities and beyond. Calgary has no shortage of volunteers; we are 20,000 strong – and volunteers deserve to be recognized for their hard work.

Rise Up! Calgary

RISE UP Weekend pop-up performances are an initiative of the Friends of the Federation of Calgary Communities, thanks to a generous grant from The Calgary Foundation and administrative support from RISE UP. There is no cost for your community association to participate.

Citizens+ Students Planning Project

Citizens+Students Planning Project In this community partnership process senior students and instructors from the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape (SAPL) at the University of Calgary work on a variety of planning issues in consultation with selected community associations related to both short term problem solving and long term visioning of community enrichment opportunities. The focus is on physical planning and urban design of the built environment and how changes to density, land use, transportation, green space, local services and streetscapes can affect positive changes at a neighbourhood scale. There is a strong community consultation process involved in developing studio projects, and final presentations, reports and design products are produced for the communities involved.

Exploring Communities

Exploring Communities is a community program we offer in collaboration with the Urban Studies department at the University of Calgary. This program brings together students and community based organizations and their volunteers to implement placemaking projects that re-envision unused community spaces. Students work to inspire a meaningful connection between community organizations and their residents through the development of projects by identifying demographics, community needs, and amenities unique to each community. The final projects are presented in a ‘Pitch Night’ where the audience will decide the micro-grant winners!

Energizing Spaces Fund

The ENMAX Energizing Spaces Fund was created to help ensure that Calgary’s community spaces can continue to enhance our neighbourhoods for many years to come. ENMAX has renewed Energizing Spaces, a reimbursement grant, until the end of 2022, with $75,000 each year up for grabs! Not only will this program continue to cover electrical appliance replacements and outdoor rink and safety lighting, but it will also include a few energy efficiency install events. There are three application streams: Appliances, Rink and Safety Lighting, and Energy Efficiency Install.
