Calgary, AB – The Federation of Calgary Communities (the Federation) is pleased to announce the 2026 recipients of the Energizing Spaces powered by ENMAX grant program. Since 2015, the program has supported more than 100 community organizations with energy-efficient upgrades that reduce operating costs, improve safety, and strengthen vital community spaces.
Energizing Spaces provides grants of up to $10,000 to help community organizations replace aging appliances and lighting with energy-efficient alternatives. The program also supports organizations without facilities by funding outdoor string lighting, helping create welcoming and accessible gathering spaces.
“Energizing Spaces was created to help community organizations reduce energy costs so they can invest more resources into programming and services that bring people together,” says Pooja Shrestha, Community Grant Implementor at the Federation. “Over the years, the program has evolved into a highly anticipated community investment that helps organizations create safer, more welcoming spaces, support food programs, and ensure volunteers have the tools they need to serve their communities effectively.”
What began as a program focused primarily on energy efficiency has grown to address a wide range of community needs. For many organizations, upgraded equipment is essential to delivering programs and services safely and reliably.
Acadia Community Association, a 2026 recipient, highlighted this need in its application:
“We have experienced instances where our freezer could not maintain safe temperatures, forcing us to discard food at events when our community is most engaged, and when dependable service matters most. There are also clear health and safety concerns. Replacing the current freezer with an Energy Star rated one will ensure safe, reliable food storage, reduce waste, and allow us to consistently meet demand. It will also lower energy consumption and operating costs, enabling reinvestment into community programming, volunteer initiatives, and accessible events.”
This year, the program is investing $97,075 in 23 community organizations. The funded projects will:
- Create brighter, safer and more welcoming community spaces that encourage year-round use.
- Support community programs that reduce isolation and foster belonging.
- Improve food safety and reduce waste through the replacement of aging refrigerators, freezers and kitchen appliances.
- Transform underused outdoor spaces into vibrant gathering places through enhanced lighting and accessibility improvements.
“At ENMAX, we believe strong communities are rooted in connection,” says Krista Moroz, Manager, Community Impact. “Energizing Spaces is one way we bring that belief to life, helping organizations create safer, more welcoming places where people can gather, access support and build a sense of belonging. We’re proud to contribute to vibrant, resilient communities across Calgary.”
Together, ENMAX and the Federation have now distributed 262 grants, investing more than $1 million in community organizations across Calgary. These investments have helped organizations lower operating costs, improve shared spaces, expand community programming, and reduce their environmental footprint.
