Calgary, AB – The Federation of Calgary Communities is excited to announce the 2025 grant recipients for Energizing Spaces powered by ENMAX. Since 2015, this program has made incredible impact on community-based organizations and continues its mission to support energy-efficiency and sustainability in vibrant community spaces across Calgary.
Energizing Spaces offers three streams of funding including up to $10,000 for new or replacement appliances or LED lighting, and up to $500 in portable market lighting.
“Energizing Spaces was envisioned as a straightforward grant program, designed to help communities take small steps towards energy efficiency and reduce electricity costs, freeing up funds for vital community activities,” says Pooja Shrestha, Community Grant Implementor at the Federation of Calgary Communities. “However, the stories we’ve received reveal a much deeper impact. From seniors no longer struggling with laundry thanks to new appliances, to significant reductions in plastic waste through dishwasher installations, and increased safety in community spaces due to better lighting, Energizing Spaces is making a remarkable difference. It’s not just about energy savings; it’s about enhancing sustainability, improving safety, and enriching the lives of dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly for the greater good of their communities.”
What began as a program focused on energy-efficient replacements has evolved to embrace a wider range of community needs and savings. By including applications for new outdoor and rink lightings, as well as appliances, Energizing Spaces has diversified its impact, understanding that an appliance or lighting represents so much more. As the Animal Rescue Foundation Alberta (ARF), a 2025 recipient, powerfully shared:
“At ARF, every towel washed, every blanket dried represents more than just clean laundry. It is comfort for a frightened animal, dignity for a second chance, and hope for a better life. An industrial washer and dryer will not only meet the urgent needs of our […] shelter but also empower our team of over 200 dedicated volunteers to focus their energy where it is needed most.”
This year, Energizing Spaces has amplified the capacity of 19 community organizations to better serve, care for and enhance their unique communities. Through this round of applications, Energizing Spaces powered by ENMAX will
- support a community activation in an underused alley space.
- add vital security lighting around a community association’s main entrance
- Increase an organization’s ability to provide meals to over 300 seniors weekly.
“We believe strong communities are built on connection, care and collaboration,” says Krista Moroz, manager Community Impact, ENMAX. “Energizing Spaces is one of the many ways we live our commitment to supporting vibrant, resilient communities across Calgary. We’re proud to power possibilities, not just through energy savings, but by helping create safer, more welcoming spaces where people can come together, support each other and thrive.”
To date, this joint program has distributed 239 grants and invested $890,849 to help community organizations decrease operating costs, increase safety of outdoor areas and enhance their capacity to offer events, childcare and other programming all while reducing their climate footprint.
