community association awareness month

Every March, we come together with The City of Calgary to raise our voices for community, and support the 156 community associations across our city, who make Calgary’s 200+ neighbourhoods a great place to live work and play!

Community associations (CAs) are grassroots non-profits, who are dedicated to offering their communities social, educational and recreational opportunities close to home. They build connections between neighbours and provide a voice for community life in municipal proceedings. Whether you know it or not, you have been positively affected by the work of community associations and its volunteers.

This month, be part of it! Support the vibrancy of your community by getting involved with your community association. Whether you attend an event, register for a program, buy a membership or volunteer, being active in your community association strengthens connections between neighbours, increases safety and improves the quality of life for everyone.

Be part of Community Association Awareness Month by exploring the resources below.

What is a Community Association?

Community associations (CAs) are dedicated to ensuring our communities offer a great place to live, work and play. Volunteers lead these organizations. They support neighbourhoods throughout Calgary by connecting residents and providing a voice for community life while offering social, educational, and recreational opportunities close to home.

CAs have the unique ability to mobilize, support, and interact with their residents to improve neighbourhood life in Calgary.

Everyday, they make significant contributions to the health and well-being of your community. More than 20,000 CA volunteers, the largest collective volunteer movement in Calgary, contribute thousands of hours to organizing and hosting social, recreational, and educational programs and events in every neighbourhood across Calgary.  CAs are non-profit organizations run by your neighbours and other volunteers that connect you, act as a voice for your area, and offer you endless opportunities close to home.

CAs are unique in Calgary, unlike their counterparts in Edmonton, Calgary’s local CAs exist without operational funding from the City of Calgary.  No other municipality in Canada, delegates this level of responsibility to residents who in turn build, maintain and lifecycle community amenities, host social, education and recreational activities and offer a voice on civic matters.

CAs are part of what makes our neighbourhoods feel like a small town in a large urban centre.

Every community association is as unique as the community it serves.
