The Westgate Community Association launched a simple project to help improve the safety and walkability of neighbourhood pathway connectors during the winter months.
The community purchased and installed ten grit bins, complete with scoops, and filled them with a cubic yard of “pickle mix” for residents to use on pathway connectors that link residential streets throughout Westgate. The project responded directly to feedback from residents, who had expressed a desire for more reliable access to winter sanding materials.
To help spread the word, flyers were delivered to nearby homes and information about the project was shared on social media. Community members also contributed by creating labels for the bins, which were attached before installation.
The grit bins give residents an easy way to help maintain pathways and improve safety for neighbours using the connectors throughout the winter. The project also draws attention to these pathways as an important community resource and reflects the Westgate Community Association’s commitment to creating a safe and walkable neighbourhood.
By providing the tools for residents to take an active role in winter pathway maintenance, this Navacord Action Grant project is helping make Westgate’s shared spaces more accessible for everyone.
