Shepard Community Association

Community Association Boundaries North: A rail line East: South: 114 Avenue SE (Beulah Vista Road) West: 84 Street SE City Quadrant: SE Community Established go to top ^ 1884 Community Description go to top ^ The Shepard area was first established in 1884 as a Canadian Pacific Railway Station and was named after one of the railway contractor partners of Shepard & Langdon. At that time, Calgary was many miles away, and one would ride the rails into “the big city” for shopping & such. A post office was established about 1905 & continued until 1966. The Shepard CPR Station now resides permanently at Heritage Park as a preserved legacy of Alberta’s pioneering history. In 1930, the first Shepard Hall Board was formed with the purpose of constructing the original Shepard Community Hall & holding community events. The original Shepard Hall has served the SE area for over 80 years as the local hub for all things “community,” including weddings, potlucks, family reunions, dances, memorials, meetings & workshops, Christmas parties and, of course, Stampede BBQs. During World War II, there were numerous dances and socials hosted for the Allied airmen who were training at the Shepard Air Field. Since the war, the local population has fluctuated significantly; however, the hall and hall board have remained constant & active and can proudly applaud themselves as one of the longest continually serving community associations in the Calgary area. The original hall, built by local volunteers with donated materials during severe economic times of the Dirty 30s, still firmly stands its ground today on the corner of 114 Ave & 84 St. SE as a glimpse into Shepard’s deep roots. In 2007, the City came calling, and a number of Shepard Area parcels of land were annexed, stretching the City’s eastern seams far out into Rocky View County’s golden prairie farmland. Since then, our rapidly changing landscape is evolving into a unique mix of quiet country urban and progressive rural residents and a few light industrial neighbours to our north and west. With a vision for this community’s future growth and a choice piece of property in hand, the Shepard Community Association and a countless plethora of truly dedicated community members volunteered tirelessly to build the building now known as the Shepard Community Hall. Our spacious hall boasts lots of user-friendly amenities, including 4 cheery meeting rooms with spectacular mountain or downtown skyline views, a great hall that will comfortably accommodate 500 of your favourite guests, elevator service for accessibility throughout both floors, a full kitchen, and a cozy pub for “tall tale telling” where “everybody knows your name” plus so much more.
