At the Friends of the Federation, we are proud to support projects that show how simple ideas can spark community connection. In 2022, the Acadia Garden and Arts Society and the Acadia Community Association came together with one shared goal: to engage residents in a new and meaningful way. Through our partnership, and the support of a Calgary Foundation Neighbour Grant, the project team installed bicycle service stations that offered a unique resource for people living in and moving through the Acadia community.
At the time, Acadia became only the third community in Calgary to host self‑repair bicycle stations. The stations quickly inspired interest and conversation. They became touchpoints that brought people together. The project team also planned an annual bicycle parade that would highlight key community locations, with the stations featured as important stops. We were especially excited to see this idea continue beyond the original project—Acadia’s bike parades are still going on today and have become a fun, ongoing way to bring the community together.
This project created new partnerships and brought in volunteers with valuable skills. The team navigated supply shortages, budget changes, and even international shipping challenges with creativity and determination. Their dedication showed the true spirit of community leadership.
As the project team shared, “Engaging with Calgary Foundation and Federation of Calgary Communities on this project has been a positive experience and we are so thrilled that our project team was able to take a community suggestion and bring that idea to reality. In these uncertain and financially challenging times, we feel very grateful that we could partner with you on this initiative. A huge thank you to all of you that assisted us in achieving this goal!”
We were grateful to support a project that brought fun, learning, and connection to Acadia. If you’re interested in exploring charitable partnership opportunities with Friends of the Federation, we encourage you to reach out. We’d be happy to connect and help spark your next community idea.
