The Somerset Bridlewood Community Garden is the heart of their community. Thanks to funding from a Lloyd Sadd Action Grant and a ClimateReadyYYC Grant, Somerset Bridlewood Community Association (SBCA) has updated this beloved community hub.
The old wooden garden beds were 15 years old and starting to rot. With the money from the Lloyd Sadd Action Grant, SCBA replaced them with stronger metal garden beds. They also added fresh soil and carefully moved any existing plants to their new homes.
The garden also got some new additions! They turned a decorative planter into a community herb garden and added a new strawberry bed. Now everyone in the community can enjoy fresh herbs and strawberries during the summer months.
SBCA’s Community Garden is an important place where they can engage all members of their community. It serves as a vibrant gathering spot for gardeners of all ages and abilities. It fosters community spirit, and helps social, physical and mental wellbeing. The garden also plays a vital role in addressing food insecurity within the community. Beyond individual plots, the new beds have both shared food plants and pollinator friendly flowers.
To increase their community support, SBCA used the ClimateReadyYYC Grant to build a seasonal resource library in the garden. In the summer, this new library will support low-income gardeners and their families by providing seeds and gardening essentials. In the winter, the library will offer important winter gear, like toques, mittens and scarves.
The SBCA’s Community Garden is now more than a gathering place; it’s a safe and welcoming hub where residents can find community and support.
In June 2025, Somerset Bridlewood hosted a Community Garden Unveiling to celebrate the all the finished projects and thank the hardworking volunteers, who made this happen.
