Colleen Foster is an active volunteer at Crossroads Court, a senior apartment building. When Colleen heard about ClimateReadyYYC grants, she saw an opportunity to do something amazing for the seniors living at Crossroads Court.

She talked to her neighbours, and they decided to apply for money to create a “climate-smart” outdoor space. It would be a place where everyone could gather together, share stories and host fun events.

They planted perennials in their garden that come back year after year and keep their outdoor space vibrant. Each resident “adopted” a plant to care for and grow. They also added two rain barrels to collect rainwater to help water their plants, even during droughts. This garden has given the residents a place to feel connected, and gave them something special to care for.

“Residents were smiling more, […and] adopted 11 planters. They designed them and paid for the plants themselves. They also became motivated to clean up the gazebo so they could hold private functions for friends and family,” said Colleen.

They planted bushes along the sidewalk to help block the wind. This will be a big help in the winter, because the wind used to blow snow over the sidewalks, making it difficult for seniors who use walkers or canes. This path also leads right to the gazebo.

The gazebo used to be a fun gathering spot, but it had become a storage space for old furniture. But when the garden started growing the residents were inspired to transform the space back into a community gathering place. Their first big event was their Stampede Breakfast, and everyone enjoyed the refreshed space.

The grant also helped the seniors learn. Colleen and her neighbours organized a workshop with the landscaper who helped design their outdoor space. The community learned about drought-resistant plants and how to take care of them. They also learned about how climate change is affecting outdoor spaces, and how to make their space “climate-smart” to help the environment.

The ClimateReadyYYC grant didn’t just create a climate-ready yard; it brought everyone closer. It was a chance for neighbors to become friends and work together. Grants aren’t just about money; they have a ripple effect that helps build strong communities and lasting relationships.
