The City is working to help businesses and organizations ensure that their commercial kitchens meet the Alberta building and fire codes and are safe for the many people who use them.

Commercial kitchens are cooking spaces in non-residential buildings where cooking creates grease-laden vapours. In 2016, the City asked organizations to stop cooking with grease-laden vapours until they met safety requirements. Issues with ventilation, heating systems, and appliances can pose a safety risk.

The City of Calgary is scheduling inspection dates this year to determine if your kitchen meets the Alberta building and fire code, and if it needs repairs or renovations. There are also grants and upgrades available to assist with costs incurred.

In April 2017, the City announced that cooking in a closed oven will be considered acceptable, as long as an organization has a mandatory cleaning and maintenance schedule.
