Despite the gloomy weather, spirits were high for our first ever Bowls, Beers, Bites lawn bowling tournament on Friday, August 9th!
Bowls, Beers, Bites replaced our previous summer event, the annual Chip in Fore Communities golf tournament, and provided an opportunity to raise money to continue helping communities across the city. The event was a huge success and provided an opportunity for community members to come together, enjoy food, drink, and for many, to learn how to lawn bowl.
“It was an awesome time to have a chance to meet other community leaders and learn more about the sport of lawn bowling,” says Jermyn Voon, Federation Board Member.
The event would not have been possible without the sponsorship of Toole Peet Insurance, Servus Credit Union, Sagium, BRC Group, our helpful volunteers, and our gracious hosts, the Calgary Lawn Bowling Club, and team. Also, Village Ice Cream, Village Brewery, True Buch Kombucha, COBS Bread, and Soul Kitchen BBQ all provided awesome products for everyone to enjoy for the evening. Northbridge supplied awesome candy treats to keep our bowlers energized.
Lawn bowling was a first for many in attendance, so the bowligan station, similar to a mulligan in golf, was quite popular – as it gave the bowlers a chance to purchase additional turns. Several competitions ran throughout the night, including the Fearsome Foursome, a team spirit/costume contest, a putting contest, and a social media contest. The contests encouraged some friendly competition and created a fun way to raise money for the continued support of communities in Calgary.
“It was a lot of fun having some friendly competition with some people,” Voon says.
The end of the evening was celebrated with an indoor awards ceremony, recognizing the lawn bowling champions, as well as the many others who won door prizes, the prize winner for the entrants to our Birdies for Kids draw, and the bowligan draw.
Overall, the event was lots of fun and was met with high praise from many of the bowlers. There is already excitement surrounding next year’s tournament and we hope to see you there!
“Despite the weather, I think people had a blast and will be looking forward to the next event – I definitely want to sign up a team again,” said Terry Koch, Federation President.
