City Repair Calgary  will be  organizing three exciting events in early March with internationally-renowned architect and placemaker Mark Lakeman. Mark’s extensive volume of work focuses on creating inclusive cities for all. Most recently, he has been part of the Village Coalition in Portland, focusing on designing villages and sleeping pods for homeless people, and changing negative perspectives in order to find land and partner organizations to facilitate safe shelter creation. How do we build bridges in the face of adversity and take positive and peaceful action toward creating a just society? Join renowned architect and placemaker Mark Lakeman as well as local guests for a thought-provoking evening focused on reimagining our urban environment as an inclusive, accessible, and unified village. 

Mark’s work incorporates broad participation, local ownership, empowering local populations, creative expression in planned and unplanned processes, and social capital as the primary economic engine of change. Many of his projects involve restoring dignity to low income and homeless people in the development of sustainable community solutions, most recently with the work of the Village Coalition.

This dynamic gathering will include a number of local organizations showcasing their solutions-oriented approaches to celebrating culture and valuing diversity.

Join Gaiacraft and City Repair Calgary in welcoming Mark Lakeman back to Calgary for a half-day workshop presenting powerful ideas for building resilient communities. Mark will be accompanied by a powerhouse of women who play an active role in building Calgary’s community in diverse ways. 

This learning adventure will provide a dazzling spectrum of tools for building participatory culture and establishing lasting change. Add action based techniques to your toolkit that will help you to learn more about where you live, create meaningful relationships, strengthen networks and build resiliency locally, for yourself and your neighbourhood.
