Queensland Winter Olympic Festival

Queensland Winter Olympic Festival

After identifying a public space that needed activating, Queensland Community Association applied to ActivateYYC to host a winter carnival near the end of January. A winter carnival was proposed because it promoted year-round use of a space that is typically only used in the spring or summer. Using a $750 ActivateYYC microgrant, Queensland was able to host a lively festival that included skating, sledding, snow sculpting, hockey, and a bonfire! Hot chocolate, popcorn and biscuits were also offered to keep participants warm. Around 60 people showed up to the festival despite the frigid temperatures. Although this winter carnival did not require any City permits, it was still able to bring the community together for exercise, fresh air and lots of conversation!
