2021-2022 Citizens + Students Project Application
Is your community looking for help in exploring physical planning, urban design, and asset mapping? If so, then you should apply for our Citizens+Students project. Since every community will be undergoing a multi-community local area plan, this project is a great way to get you thinking about how your community will change and develop. This partnership has existed since 2013 and involves Master of Planning Students at the University of Calgary working with selected community associations on a variety of planning issues related to both short-term problem solving and long-term visioning of community enrichment opportunities. Application closes midnight October 31, 2021, submit your applications by clicking the link above.
Urban Planning Committee (UPC) Application
Are you interested in providing community perspectives on planning projects in the city? Then joining the Urban Planning Committee might be a great opportunity for you! UPC is an advisory group made up of community representatives that discuss major planning projects; identifies ideas for action, and assists the Federation’s planners in developing responses to City of Calgary planning projects. UPC meets virtually once a month. If you are interested in applying, please click this link.

Partners in Planning (PIP) Courses
The Partners in Planning program (PIP) is a free, award-winning certificate program offered by the Federation of Calgary Communities in partnership with The City of Calgary. The program is geared towards helping community association planning volunteers and the public to develop skills for effective participation in the planning process. Elective courses being offered this fall include:
Heritage (Elective)
Heritage buildings are valuable assets to cities. Join City planners for an online workshop as they discuss the importance of heritage assets to the City, how to find the inventory list of assets, and how to designate properties. Learn about the new tools and incentives approved by City Council that will be used to protect assets. Discuss what communities can do and how they can advocate for heritage in their neighbourhoods and the City. Join us October 16th from 9:00am-12:00pm!
Orientation to the Planning Process (OPP)
Have you ever wondered how planning and development happens in the city? Join The Federation’s urban planners as they discuss the planning process in Calgary. Our planners will start with the basics to help you understand planning policies and how decisions are made at the City. You will leave feeling like an expert ready to tackle all planning and development opportunities and challenges in your community. Join us on October 20th 7:00pm-9:00pm!
Planning Hierarchy (Lunch and Learn)
Did you know planning policies are tiered? Policies in lower-level plans can only be created if they are allowed by the province. During the session, The Federation’s urban planners will explain the planning hierarchy and where the City of Calgary’s planning authority comes from. Join us during your lunch hour on October 28th 12:00pm-1:00pm!
