Federation of Calgary Communities Statement Regarding Black Lives Matter
We believe that racism and discrimination have no place in our communities. We are inspired by Calgarians and those across Canada and the world who are standing together in this fight against racism and police brutality. We all have a role to play. We encourage our members to think about what their role is in eliminating racism and discrimination in our communities. We understand that as an organization we still have a lot to learn but we are dedicated to that learning and becoming better allies, as well as sharing information on resources and organizations who are leading in this work on anti-racism and equity in our communities and beyond. Please click here to read our full statement.

Financial Literacy One-on-One Support!

This summer, we welcomed Andy to our team. Andy is a business administration and accounting student who is providing one-on-one financial accountability support in areas like cash flows and budgeting to our members, as well as to answer any questions you, your community association volunteers, and treasurers may have in regards to any resources available during COVID-19. To get in touch with Andy, send  him an email at help@calgarycommunities.com. We also have a Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) Tracker Tool available! Our CEWS Tracker Tool will help you determine the best method to receive the most out of your benefit as well as determining eligibility. Click here to access this resource.

Cleaning Supplies for Community Associations
We have restocked Quat Plus, gloves, 1 L hand sanitizers, and face shields on our online store! Quantities are limited, so make sure to order yours while you can. Note that there is a limit of one per customer to give everyone a chance to get these items for their community gardens. Thanks to generosity of The Calgary Foundation Neighbour Grants – your community garden can still save an extra 15% off the already reduced cost using the coupon code GARDEN15 (we have scored some awesome prices!). Shop now on our charity’s website, The Friends of the Federation of Calgary Communities, by clicking here.

June is National Indigenous History Month

Aboriginal Awareness Week Calgary is hosting a virtual celebration on June 21 for National Indigenous Day. This year’s theme is, “Keeping the Circle Strong through Mother Earth’s Future Generations.” You can check out the event schedule here and join the celebrations! On June 17 at noon you are also welcome to join the CDLI Meet Up: Equity and Reconciliation in Calgary. On June 9, the Tamarack Institute hosted a webinar on “Creating a Culture of Equity and Reconciliation.” CDLI, Carya and the Federation are collaborating to host a conversation to reflect on Calgary communities’ collective learnings from the webinar and what that means from a Calgary specific context. While June is the national month of celebration, and National Indigenous Peoples Day is celebrated on June 21, we encourage learning to happen throughout the year. Click here to register for this session.

Here are a few highlights from our urban planning world this month. Be sure to check our blog for a complete listing of recent events and updates!

1. Municipal Development Plan and Calgary Transportation Plan
The Municipal Development Plan (MDP) and Calgary Transportation Plan (CTP) are documents that will guide land use and transportation in Calgary in the long term. The City is proposing amendments to the two plans and will be collecting feedback online until June 26. Please click the link above to read the proposed amendments and to provide feedback.

2. Green Line Stage 1 Alignment

On Tuesday June 2, the Green Line Committee of Council agreed to forward recommendations on Green Stage 1 alignment to City Council. City Council will decide on the recommendations on June 15, 2020. You can participate by speaking at the meeting or by providing a written public submission. You can also watch the committee meeting online here. You can read about the recommended Stage 1 alignment and see answers to answers to frequently asked questions by clicking the above link.

3. Changes to Outdoor Patio Permitting Process
As the City continues in its reopening process for restaurants and small businesses, City Council has announced a new temporary permitting process for outdoor patios. Businesses can now apply for temporary patios on public properties such as the sidewalk. Businesses that wish to establish a patio on private property will need a development permit; once the development permit has been approved, the patio approval is permanent. Please click the link above to read more.

4. Share your thoughts on Calgary’s Landmark Projects
A research group with the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape at the University of Calgary is exploring the impact of large-scale infrastructure projects on residents of Calgary. If you are impacted by either Downtown, the Plus 15 or the Ring Road, the team will like to hear from you. Click the link above and share if you use any of these infrastructures and how you would like to see them change in the future.

5. Explore Your Street Survey
The City would like your input to help them understand how you use your neighbourhood streets. Please share your experiences, observations, drawings, and pictures of how you use the streets in your community. You can complete the survey in the link above for as many streets as you want.

6. The Community Guide to the Planning Process
We are in the process of updating the Community Guide to Planning Process and need your help! If you have used the guide before, we want to hear your thoughts on what can be improved. Please fill out this survey to share your thoughts!

7. Community Amenity Map

We are also creating a Community Amenity map. This map will list some amenities that can be found in communities across the city, such as schools, rinks, and dog parks. We need your help to review that the information we have for this map is correct! Please fill out this survey to let us know what we got right and what we missed!
