 Exploring Communities
We’re looking for four community associations to take part in our Exploring Communities ‘Community Collabs’ program to make placemaking projects happen! Through this program, students from the University of Calgary will work with your CA to design a project that will inspire residents to come together. Each community will then receive a microgrant to implement their project. Click here for the application. It closes on November 30!
City Planner Meet & Greet
We’re offering a meet and greet opportunity with City of Calgary planners. This is an unstructured event, giving you the chance to speak one-on-one about planning in your area or inquire about specific projects going on around the city. It’s taking place at Erin Woods CA on the morning of Nov 17th. Click here to register.
Community Representation Framework
Community Representation Framework (CRF) did not go to committee on Nov. 7. Instead, the Standing Policy Committee for Community and Protective Services (CPS) met with administration to clarify the work and how we arrived at the five priorities and results. CPS members made three recommendations. While there is work to be done to address the recommendations, we know that the five priorities and results will still move forward on Dec. 5. We’re hoping to get a new draft of that plan before the end of November – which we will send out. In the meantime, please mark your calendars for Wednesday, Dec 5 as this is when CPS will hear the report. If you want to speak on CRF, this will be your opportunity. Featured Faces of Community
Our featured Face for November is Carlos Arce-Abrego! Carlos joined the Calgary Marlborough Community Association over five years ago when he was reading his community newsletter and wanted to help reduce the crime statistics in the neighbourhood and get more neighbours involved. He’s super proud of the rich diversity in his community and the initiatives he gets to be a part of. Watch him tell his story on our YouTube channel here!
Combined Orientation to the Planning Process 101 & 201 Workshop
Have you recently joined your planning committee or are you new to the planning process? On Saturday, December 1, we’re offering both Orientation to the Planning Process 101 and Planning Committees 101. The former will take place at 9:00 am and the later will take place at 11:00 am. Engaging with Youth: Construction/Renovation Funding OpportunityDoes your community have a construction project that youth volunteers could help you build? If so, Youth Central has an exciting opportunity for you! They’re looking to fund a variety of community construction projects that Youth Central volunteers can complete for you. Projects can range from $500 – 5,000 and would need to be completed by youth volunteers as a way to give back to their Calgary community while also learning valuable construction skills in the process. Good Neighbour Assistance Programs & Opportunities Workshop
Join the City of Calgary for a free workshop and discuss what kind of services might be needed in your community by seniors, vulnerable persons and others. Learn from other communities that have implemented a variety of community service programs for residents and brainstorm next steps that can turn ideas into reality. The workshop is on Thursday November 19th from 7pm-9m with a light dinner served at 6:30pm. | Here are a few highlights from our urban planning world this month. Be sure to check our blog for a complete listing of recent events and updates!
1. The Federation is Accepting Applications for our Urban Planning Committee
We are seeking community members from community associations to join our Urban Planning Committee (UPC). UPC is a committee of the Board of Directors that provides a holistic community lens, identifies ideas for action, and assists the Federation’s planners in developing response to City of Calgary planning projects. UPC meets the second last Monday of the Month from 7-9 pm at the Federation office. If you are interested in joining, please send an expression of interest engageinplanning@calgarycommunities.com. Applicants should include their background and experience, particularly in community association and planning-related work.
2. Change to Public Notices
As of early 2019, public notices will no longer be posted in The Calgary Herald. Moving forward, public notices will include the physical notice board on site, mail circulation to adjacent neighbours, PD Map, public notices online and circulations to CA planning committees.
3. 2019 Service Plans and Budgets
From November 14th until November 26th, you can view the 2019-2022 Service Plans and Budgets online and provide your feedback. This budget has major implications for communities as it deals with planning & development, public realm improvements, parks and open spaces, and many other services that are key to your community. |

Make a Wish!
 If you throw a penny into a fountain and make a wish, it’s supposed to come true. The same can be said about planting flowers in the Ramsay Community Garden! The robot art installation in the Ramsay garden is full of wildflower paper seeds and pencils. Neighbours are encouraged to write their wish or dream on the paper and plant it, then watch their dream grow. ActivateYYC recommends waiting until spring to try this out, but you knew that!
