Property Tax Changes
Worried about property tax changes for your organization? There have been changes to “Community Organization Property Tax Exemption Regulations” (COPTER), however we don’t see this adversely affecting community-based organizations that are currently exempt. Read more here.

Here are a few highlights from our urban planning world this month – be sure to check our blog for a complete listing of recent events and updates.

  1. Infill Scoping Report Update: The City has now released a potential third objective they hope to address with their scoping report. We are also looking for community volunteers with a strong understanding of infill development to be part of a city-led working group for infills. Please read more to see the criteria and send in your interest.
  2. Community Planning Exchange on Nov 4th: Join us on Saturday, November 4th for our 6th Community Planning Exchange (CPE)! This year CPE will explore the theme of “Change in Communities”. This free half-day workshop will give communities an understanding of laneway housing, heritage overlays, and age-friendly planning; three innovative approaches that are being used in our city to address change. Click the link to register.
  3. Community Visions: What’s your vision for the future? The Federation has been working on a template for CAs to create visions of their communities in terms of built form, mobility, and landscape. We are looking for a community interested in piloting the current template, with hopes that we can roll out the visions to all of Calgary’s communities. If you’re interested in being part of the project or would like more information, contact Ben at planning@calgarycommunities.com
  4. Urban Agriculture Pilot Program & Land use bylaw amendment: The City is implementing a pilot project to advance urban agriculture opportunities in Calgary. Existing ways of growing food have improved and new ways of growing food in urban areas have emerged that require City support and coordination. The City is seeking applications from qualified non-profit organizations who would like to develop an urban farm project on underused City-owned vacant land, with the goal of producing healthy food for commercial sale while providing significant community benefit. Click the link to learn more.
  5. PIP- Land use Bylaw Course On Nov 18: Sign up for our PIP core course on the Land use Bylaw. Hurry quick as this is one of our most popular courses!
  6. Call out for community members to join our Urban Planning Committee: We are seeking community members from new or suburban developing communities to join our Urban Planning Committee (UPC). UPC is an advisory committee that meets monthly to discuss major planning processes or issues that the Federation is working on or to identify items that need to be on our radar.
