Celebrating Refugees
The Centre for Newcomers will launch its 2nd annual city-wide Refugee Celebration Campaign on June 1, 2017, in order to engage the broader community in showing their support for our fellow Calgarians. This coincides with June 20th, observed as World Refugee Day to honor the strength, courage, and resilience of the millions of refugees around the world. You can stop by the Federation office during the month of June to get your orange ribbon. For more info click here.

Senior's Funding
Government of Canada has announced call for proposals for community-based projects supporting seniors. The NHSP call for proposals, open until June 23, 2017, is seeking proposals for projects led or inspired by seniors. Organizations are invited to apply for funding for projects that promote positive aging and empower seniors to initiate and participate in activities that benefit the community. Building Resilience 2017
We’re thrilled to be joining the Canadian Institute of Planners and the Alberta Professional Planners Institute’s Annual Conference “Building Resilience 2017,” speaking on inclusive cities and the community association model in Calgary! Calgary Foundation’s 2017 Vital Signs Survey now live!
The Calgary Foundation wants to know what you think about important issues impacting quality of life in Calgary. Take the 2017 Vital Signs survey before June 26. Calgary’s Vital Signs asks for your input into five priority areas: Community connections, arts, living standards, wellness, and environment. By adding your voice, you are helping us to gather important information in support of these priorities. Survey results will be incorporated into the full Calgary’s Vital Signs Report, released on October 3, 2017.

Congratulations to our PIP Graduates!
Congratulations to our PIP class of 2017! We had 25 graduates this year and they will be presented with their certificates at our annual general meeting on June 3rd. Click here to find out more about the schedule and activities during our AGM and tradeshow.

Green Line Updates
Open houses for information about the Stage 1 recommendation in the SE will be held on May 30th and May 31st. Click here for more information about the open houses. If you are a community that will be affected by Stage 1 of the Green Line LRT and have questions or concerns about the project, we would be happy to hear from you. RESOLVE Campaign Posters and Billboards
The RESOLVE campaign is a partnership of nine social service agencies and aims to create affordable and supported rental housing for up to 3,000 vulnerable and homeless Calgarians. Keep a look out for their billboards and LRT platform posters! If you find one of the LRT platform posters, take a selfie with it and post on social media using #roofbooth and @resolveyyc to share your support of creating affordable and supported rental housing for vulnerable and homeless Calgarians Click here to learn more about the RESOLVE Campaign.

Urban Planning Film Showing
Citizen Jane: Battle for the City, which chronicles the urbanist Jane Jacobs and her opposition to several Robert Moses projects in New York City, is being showed at 7:00 PM on June 18th, 2017 at the Globe Cinema, 617 8 Street SW. The event is being hosted by the Alberta Professional Planners Institute and the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP). Admission is by donation, with proceeds going to the CIP’s student scholarship program.

Proposed Centre City Entreprise Area
The City of Calgary is proposing to address vacancy rates of office and retail by encouraging pop-up businesses in our currently underused spaces in the Centre City area. The proposed Land use Bylaw changes will remove the requirement for a development permit for a change of use within the Enterprise Area (if it is a listed use in the district). Certain uses and Evaluated Historic Resource properties will still require a development permit. Click here if you’d like more information.
