National Volunteer Week
National Volunteer Week 2018 is April 15 to 21 and we at the Federation of Calgary Communities want to thank the 20,000 volunteers that make up Calgary’s 151 community associations – the largest collective volunteer network in the city. Stay tuned to our social media as we will be sharing videos and posts that you are welcome to use to thank the volunteers who make up your community association. 
Beware: Fraudulent Emails 

A couple of organizations have reached out to us stating that they have been receiving fraudulent emails that look extremely legit. For example, an email from the president’s email address to the treasures asking for a transfer of funds. Please check these emails about money transfers very carefully and be extra cautious. If you do get these emails or have questions about them please reach out to your Calgary Police Service Community Resource Officer (CRO).

Pitch Night: Neighbour Grants LIVE!

Shift from Inside to Outside
Lori Beattie, author of Calgary’s Best Walks, will take you on a walking tour through the community of Winston Heights/Mountview to inspire the value of walking as a way to get to know your neighbours and neighbourhood. Be inspired to reconnect with the outdoors. Come prepared to get your steps in for the day as we shift out into the community. Please note, this session is a walking tour that will be 60 – 75 minutes long and will be throughout the community of Winston Heights Mountview, please prepare for rain or shine and proper footwear. Green Calgary Rain Barrel Sales Beginning in April!
Green Calgary is hosting several rain barrel events in local communities throughout the spring and summer, where you can purchase a rain barrel, all the fittings and other green products for your organization or home. Outdoor Rink Volunteer Appreciation & Networking Event
Join the City of Calgary on Thursday April 12 for a celebration of all the hardworking outdoor rink volunteers who put in countless hours to make rinks for all to enjoy. Free workshop on April 16: Spaces as Places
Creating 8-80 communities for walking, biking, interaction and play. Join us and guest speakers Dr. Kay Teschke and Rebecca O’Brien for a discussion about what factors make people of all ages and abilities feel comfortable walking and riding a bike, and how cities can design our spaces to make walking and riding a bike safer.   1. Planning Committees 201: Do you want to learn more about the SDAB? Jim Palmer SDAB member and community leader will share his knowledge about common challenges and gaps that our community associations face at the SDAB and tips on how to avoid them. Sign up today!
  2. April 5 Public Hearing on Cannabis Legalization: The public hearing on the City’s proposed policies relating to cannabis legalization will take place on April 5 at 9:30 am in Council Chambers at the Calgary Municipal Building. Issues relating to public consumption and enforcement will be discussed at a committee meeting on April 3. Click here for more info.
  3. FAQ on the Changes to Secondary Suites Part 2: The Federation has new information on how the changes to secondary suites will be implemented. We have created a secondary suite FAQ Part 2 and summarized the updates to share with your community. Click here to learn more.
  4. Notice posting survey: The City would like to stop advertising approved Development Permits in the newspaper and move primarily to advertising through online tools such as the Planning & Development Map. This change would not apply to change in land use or existing notice posting details. Help us gather data on your preferences for notification and what potential barriers you see with this change.   5. Infill Working Group Update: The Infill working group met for the first time since their introduction to one another and the group’s objective on March 1. Click here to read our discussion items.
  6. Faculty of Environmental Design Year End Show: Join EVDS at their 2018 Year End Show on April 21. This open house gallery will showcase the final studio projects and theses from the graduating Master’s Students from the Faculty of Environmental Design including Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Environmental Design Research. Click here for more info.
