Canada Health Communities Initiative
The Canada Healthy Communities Initiative is providing up to $31 million in existing federal funding to support communities as they deploy new ways to adapt spaces and services to respond to immediate and ongoing needs arising from COVID-19 over the next two years. Organizations with project ideas are invited to apply through the Community Foundations of Canada. The first intake for applications will close on March 9th, 2021 at 5:00 PM PST. Details on project eligibility and how to apply for project funding are available on Community Foundations of Canada’s website.
Connect your community work to Earth Hour Unplugged in Calgary! To support global action on climate change, Calgarians reduce their energy consumption every year for Earth Hour, including landmarks such as the Calgary Tower and Saddledome along with City of Calgary buildings, shopping malls, coffee shops, microbreweries, and stores.
Calgary’s Earth Hour has included Facebook posts reaching 46,000 people and event day having 14,000 social media views along with tv, print, and radio coverage. Events take place the week leading up to Earth Hour Saturday March 27th, 8:30-9:30pm. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org or call 403-270-3200 for info.
Here are a few highlights from our urban planning world this month.
1. Partners in Planning
Join us virtually on Saturday, March 13 at 9:00 a.m. to learn how citizens can actively participate in the planning process! This Partners in Planning session will explain the role of formal decision-making bodies (i.e., Council and Calgary Planning Commission), how and when to provide feedback on an application and how to make the most of engagement opportunities. 2. The Guidebook for Great Communities
The latest draft of the proposed Guidebook for Great Communities went to the Standing Policy Committee on Planning and Urban Development (PUD) on February 3. Members of the committee voted to recommend the guidebook and Councill will decide on whether or not to approve the document on March 22. 3. North Hill Communities Local Area Plan
The latest draft of the proposed North Hill Communities Local Area Plan also went to the Standing Policy Committee on Planning and Urban Development (PUD) on February 3. Members of the committee voted to recommend the plan and Councill will decide on whether or not to approve the document on March 22. You can read the proposed Local Area Plan here.
4. 11 Street S.W. Underpass Functional Planning Study
The City of Calgary is undertaking a functional planning study for the 11 Street S.W. and CP Rail underpass, between 8th and 11th Avenue. Head here and provide your input on how you currently use the area, and share your issues, concerns and ideas for future opportunities.
