The provincial government is seeking to make changes to the Municipal Government Act. Read on for more information.

The provincial government of Alberta has introduced the Act to Strengthen Municipal Government to the Legislature. This bill is part of the Municipal Government Act review, and it proposes changes that would help municipalities build stronger and more sustainable communities. You can read more about the proposed changes on the MGA review website by clicking here.

The changes were identified through a consultation process with Albertans last summer. The What We Heard section shows how feedback was reflected

The proposed changes have been categorized into three broad issues:

The consultation on MGA regulations is still happening. All MGA related regulations are being reviewed , and each will be posted online for 60 days.

The second group of draft regulations is scheduled to be posted to the MGA review website later this year, and the provincial government will then ask for feedback on them.

The provincial government seeks to pass an Act to Strengthen Municipal Government in the spring 2017 session, and have the changes ready before the fall 2017 municipal elections.
