Here are a few highlights from our urban planning world this month.

1. Guide for Local Area Planning (formerly the Guidebook for Great Communities)
You can read the official minutes or listen to the public hearing (Item 8.2.1) here.

Following direction from Council in March, the Guidebook team has proposed amendments to the Guidebook based on feedback received from various stakeholders. One of the proposed amendments is a new name. The document will now be called Guide for Local Area Planning (Guide). Administration presented a summary of the themes of feedback they heard at the March Council hearing. They also presented a summary of proposed amendments to the Guide. You can watch the webinar here.

Administration is proposing several amendments that can be included as part of the Guide now and a sustainment program that lays the foundation for further refinements to the Guide in the future. Administration’s report, which will include all 62 proposed amendments, can be accessed here and will be presented to the Standing Policy Committee on Planning and Urban Development today. You can watch the live feed here.
Learn more about the Guidebook for Great Communities at Calgary.ca/Guidebook.

2. Calgary: The Community Perspective Project

Becky Poschmann is a thesis student in the MEDes program with the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape at the University of Calgary. She is also a fellow community association volunteer. Becky is conducting research on the experience community associations have had with community engagement planning projects. This research intends to understand how your community association received information about a planning project and the steps taken to undertake engagement.

Information can be shared and received in many ways. It is important to find a balance to ensure that community members are given equal opportunities to participate in public engagement impacting their communities. The research will begin with an interview selection form. This form will be used to determine which communities to involve in the Stage 2 interviews. If your community is not selected for Stage 2, we will look to have you involved during the Stage 3 workshops. Please visit the above link to collaborate!

The research for this project has been approved by the CFREB (REB20-1552).

3. Community Involvement Toolkit – survey

Are you interested in changes happening in your community, including proposals for land use rezoning or new developments, but not sure where to start or how to get involved?
Discussing change in our communities – and specifically, understanding how and why redevelopment happens and how and where to get involved – isn’t easy. The City created the Community Involvement Toolkit for citizens interested in getting involved in local planning and development matters. The toolkit includes information and resources to help you understand when, where and how to get involved in the planning and development of our city and communities.

If you haven’t had a chance to check out the Community Involvement Toolkit yet, please do and then let us know what you think via the Community Involvement Toolkit Feedback Survey. We want to know if you find the information and resources helpful and any suggested improvements.

4. Modernizing the Joint Use and Planning Agreement
The Joint Use and Planning Agreement is a partnership between The City of Calgary, the Calgary Board of Education, the Calgary Catholic School District and the Conseil Scolaire FrancoSud. The Agreement provides the tools and guidance required to achieve complete communities. It also outlines the coordinated approach to the allocation, use, planning and development, and maintenance of municipal reserve, open space, and school sites to address the evolving needs of Calgarians.

The City would like your input on permitted uses, recreation activities and mobility options for municipal reserve and joint use sites. These sites are community hubs that residents use for a variety of activities and events. Your input will be used, where possible, to ensure these sites continue to meet the evolving needs of Calgarians over time. If you weren’t able to provide feedback during the original engagement period, the survey will be available May 12 to 16 at engage.calgary.ca/jupa.
