We’ve been hearing quite a bit recently about some proposed changes to the Land Use Bylaw (LUB) that outline specific parcel dimensions for homes with secondary suites (specifically report M-2016-004). On April 13, we sent a letter to Community Association presidents and planning committees on the changes. Click here to see it: Re M-2016-004- Apr 15 update. The City has also updated their website with more information on the changes. That information can be found here: http://www.calgary.ca/PDA/pd/Pages/Current-studies-and-ongoing-activities/Secondary-Suite-proposed-amendments-to-the-Land-Use–Bylaw.aspx

In a nutshell, the ammendments would change minimum parcel requirements that allow for secondary suites (depth, width, and area), as well as increase the maximum allowable area for a suite. The City has produced a chart that outlines the specific proposed changes here. It will only apply in districts where secondary suites are already allowed. Where a  land use ammendment is required to allow for a secondary suite, it will still need to be decided on by Council, with a public hearing.

Some of the concerns we've heard will not be impacted directly by the City’s proposed LUB changes in the M-2016-004 report. However, the upside is that with all of these concerns being identified, it’s a great opportunity to start a conversation about how you might improve issues like community standards, safety and parking issues in your communities.
