Family and friends—and some familiar “Faces”—braved the cold weather to show their appreciation and admiration for our city’s community volunteers on Friday, March 1, 2019, at the Southview Community Association.
Our Faces of Community event kicked off with the grand reveal of the 2019 Faces of Community. One-by-one, the 2019 Faces were revealed and the room erupted into applause.
The event demonstrated just how important community volunteers are to Calgarians.
We launched Faces of Community in 2017 as part of our March Community Association Awareness campaign, to highlight the many different faces of community volunteers making a difference in our city’s communities. We often hear that Calgarians don’t realize that their community organization is run by volunteers from the community, so Faces of Community helps tell the story of just some of the more than 20,000 community volunteers in Calgary who are donating their time each and every day to help improve neighbourhood life in Calgary.
“When the 2019 Faces were revealed, I was almost in tears. The value these volunteers bring to our city is something we can’t measure,” says Rebecca Dakin, our Communications and Community Relations Specialist, adding that she hopes it will continue to grow as the years go on.
“We hope that our annual Faces of Community campaign will inspire more Calgarians to step up and be part of their communities.”
Some Faces may be recognizable to the public, while others may work more behind the scenes. The campaign demonstrates that there are no requirements to be a community volunteer.
Some of our Faces got involved with their organization to make connections within their community, some saw a way in which they could share their skills, and others just wanted to make a genuine difference in their city.
While they don’t volunteer for any recognition, their peers see what a difference they make and nominate them to be one of the annual Faces of Community. Once nominated, they are chosen blindly by a panel of previous Faces and then showcased and celebrated all year long.
Our 2019 Faces of Community event showed the value in celebrating community volunteers and recognizing the difference they are making in our city.
