What is the Developed Areas Guidebook?

Communities in the developed areas of Calgary are important to the future growth of our city. Appropriate infill development, providing a housing mix, desires for main streets, the need for new or improved infrastructure and businesses that support local populations are common aspects facing these communities.

The City’s Planning & Development work includes actions to address these challenges while staying committed to our vision – Calgary: a great place to make a living, a great place to make a life for generations to come.  Our coordinated approach includes:

One of the tools to achieve these outcomes is the Developed Areas Guidebook.  The Guidebook will provide a consistent approach to policies guiding development for communities in the Developed Area (as identified in the Municipal Development Plan).

It will identify common policies, which will help streamline future local area plans, focus on the unique aspects of each community, and make planning policy more user-friendly. These policies will not apply unless indicated in the local area plan (such as an Area Redevelopment Plan), so communities with older plans, or those that don’t have a plan, will not be subject to these policies, until a future time when a local area planning process is completed for that community.

In addition, there are a number of other projects that are happening that connect and influence the Developed Areas Guidebook.  These include:
