Community Description

Braeside is located in Calgary’s southwest.  Annexed in 1956, the community began to develop in 1965.  The community allows residents to easily access the recreational opportunities of Fish Creek Provincial Park and the Glenmore reservoir, and is also conveniently located nearby major roadways and the LRT system.  The city’s bike path is also located close by.  There is a public school in the area.

The Braeside community association is extremely active, and offers a variety of programs for all ages.  For children, jellybean dances, soccer, a before and after school program, and moms and tots groups have proved popular.  The Braeside Community Childcare centre is also run out of the community centre, and puts on a variety of programs including “Sensational Summer” which offers field trips and events to keep kids entertained while school is out.  The Girl Guides and the Boy Scouts also run out of the community centre.  For teens, Braeside offers youth dances and Teen Garage Band Night.  Adults and seniors can enjoy Tai Chi, take part in dog obedience classes, join the Trym Gym, or enjoy pub night, complete with special events such as “Name that Tune.”  There are also a number of programs geared specifically toward seniors.  The Southwest Seniors, a group run out of the community centre, plan social events including bowling, cards, dance classes, and potluck suppers.  Braeside also puts on a number of special events each year, notably, the annual Halloween party, Stampede Breakfast, Fall Fair, Community Garage Sale, and Family Fun Skates.
