Community Description

go to top ^

Dover is located in Calgary’s southeast. It is bordered on the east by the CNR Mainline and on the west by Calgary’s irrigation canal. The community was annexed in 1961 and developed in 1970. It is named after Mary Dover, a historic alderman and environmentalist. She was the daughter of A. E. Cross, one of Calgary’s initial “Big Four” businessmen. Dover is close to major transport routes and offers recreational opportunities in the nearby Bow River Valley, as well as in the parks and tot lots throughout the area. Dover’s claim to fame is the beautiful Valleyview Regional Park, which contains 12 beach volleyball courts, 2 soccer fields, a ball diamond, spray park, a beautiful pond and unique playgrounds (recently named as one of the 10 best playgrounds in Calgary). There are excellent views of the Rocky Mountains and the city in the area. Dover is home to both public and separate schools.

Dover’s community association offers a number of activities to residents. Skating in the winter months, Co-Ed Scouting, Before and after school programs, children and youth programs, adult darts, and hockey are also facilitated by the community centre. Hockey takes place at the nearby East Calgary Twin Arenas, while shinny and pleasure skating are common on the community’s outdoor rink. We also host multicultural and special events, as well as a Community Safety Initiatives group comprised of East Calgary representatives, municipal and social agencies. We serve as a resource and referral center for community residents, and share our space with various charitable and non-profit groups.
